When the team from Jisc call us in, we know it’s going to be for something new which will push the boundaries.
So, when they briefed us on how they wanted to ‘light up’ the opening ceremony at Digifest 2020, we were excited to make it happen.
Digifest, run and owned by Jisc, is THE edtech event for leaders in further and higher education. The opening ceremony at Birmingham’s ICC had to deliver something spectacular to engage and delight the audience from the off. New this year was an interactive and engaging exhibition floor with VR dome, classroom of the future as well as a stage which played host to their opening video and keynote.
It was our role to bring a creative lighting solution which would work alongside the opening VT and bring the entire exhibition to life.

We worked closely with the team at Jisc to understand what they wanted the audience to experience and take away. Our solution was designed to focus their attention on specific areas of the main hall, enhancing film, audio and an 8m high hologram who ‘hosted’ the opening ceremony.
The venue was a crowded place in the run up to opening with many elements being built in-situ. So, it was important that we got the lights rigged and truss lifted as quickly as possible. Our crew worked through the night to bring in and set up fixtures in time for rehearsals the next day.
To overcome weight limits on the in-house truss, we used a combination of Robe Mega Pointe, Robe Spider and Robe 150 beams to get the best choice and position for the lights.
Our show caller and LD worked alongside the venue team to run the opening VT and keynotes.
